The countries of East and Southern Africa faced a series of challenges stemming from the Russo-Ukrainian conflict. The World Bank responded to these crises by disbursing a total of $16.7 trillion in loans to the region. However, the World Bank's 2023 annual report predicted a slowdown in economic growth, particularly exacerbated by the energy crisis in South Africa.
The World Bank has highlighted the worrying food security situation, especially in the Horn of Africa, and is responding with funding focused on implementing effective policies and promoting resilient food systems in the long term.
