União Desportiva de Songo is deeply saddened to inform the public about the shocking incident involving its player Daniel Mutambe, affectionately known as Danito, in the city of Lubango, capital of Huíla province, Angola. The player was unable to return to the country with the team after a violent confrontation with assailants.
The incident occurred after the União Desportiva de Songo first team played the second leg of the final qualifying round for the group stage of the African Champions League. Danito, along with his teammates Ernan Siluani and Fernando Macaime, was walking down a street near the hotel where the team was staying when they were approached by a group of six assailants.
The attackers, upon encountering resistance, assaulted the players and stole their belongings, including cell phones and money. Thanks to the swift intervention of the National Police of the Republic of Angola, who were alerted by witnesses, a worse outcome was avoided, and UD Songo expresses its sincere gratitude to the police for the assistance provided.
Due to the severity of the injuries Danito sustained, he will remain in Lubango for a more detailed medical evaluation. Only after receiving clinical clearance in Luanda will he be able to return to the country. To ensure that Danito receives adequate care, União Desportiva de Songo has assigned Jorge Vulande “Mavó” and Albertino Albano, head of the Professional Football Department and team doctor, respectively, to remain with the athlete in Angola.
União Desportiva de Songo expresses its sincere wishes for a speedy recovery for Danito and hopes for his safe return to family and professional life. This incident serves as a painful reminder that the safety of athletes is an absolute priority, no matter where sporting events take place.
