This week, we went to Matola, in the Nkobe neighborhood, where we met a young man who has been involved in music since 2004 and whose musical style is Afro-pop. However, according to Big Gordo, our artist of the week, his passion for music began in 1992 when he joined a Makwayela group. Join us to find out more.
Makwayela is described and framed within the context of expressive modes found in Maputo. Its origins are discussed within the context of Southern African mining culture, and its development is associated with recent social history in Mozambique, and particularly in Maputo.
According to Big Gordo, he and his group were chosen in the same decade by the organization. That same year, the group received an invitation from the FRELIMO party to welcome former president Joaquim Chissano upon his return from Rome, where they signed the general peace agreements between FRELIMO and RENAMO. In 2004, Big Gordo entered the studio solo to record his first works. This week's artist brings not only music, but also an inspiring story. More information tomorrow.
