Legendary Mozambican musician Wazimbo was honored with the Career Award at the 2024 edition of Ngoma Moçambique. At 76, Wazimbo remains one of the most iconic figures in Mozambican music, with a career marked by successes spanning generations.
Trajectory of a Master of Music
Born on November 11, 1948, in the Mafalala neighborhood of Maputo, Wazimbo moved to Chibuto, Gaza province, as a child. It was there that his relationship with music began to develop. As a teenager, in 1964, he began his musical career with the group Silverstars, alongside Miguel Matsinhe and Hortêncio Langa.
His return to Maputo in the late 1960s marked a new phase in his career. He performed with the group Geysers, placing fourth in the Musical Olympics, an iconic event held at the former National Cinema. Even faced with challenges, such as the departure of group members for military service, Wazimbo persisted, inviting Milagre Langa and Domingos Macuácua to join the band.
In 1972, his career gained new momentum with a trip to Angola, where he shared the stage with renowned artists such as Elias Diá Kimuenzo and Massano. This experience solidified his professional trajectory and opened new doors in African music.
The Legacy of the RM Group
In the 1970s, Wazimbo played a central role in the creation of Grupo RM, a Radio Moçambique initiative led by Rafael Maguni. The group sought to promote Mozambican musical roots, promoting an authentic sound that became the foundation of the country's light music. This movement featured prominent artists such as Sox, Zeca Tcheco, and Alexandre Langa, cementing Wazimbo's importance in the history of national music.
A Well-Deserved Recognition
The Ngoma Moçambique Career Award is more than a tribute; it is a tribute to Wazimbo's impact on Mozambican culture. His dedication to music, from the humble stages of Mafalala to major international concerts, reflects the transformative power of art and persistence.
Wazimbo continues to be an inspiration to younger generations and a symbol of Mozambique's cultural pride. This award reaffirms his place as one of the living legends of national music.
