Today, November 11th, we celebrate the birthday of one of the greatest names in Mozambican music, Humberto Carlos Benfica, better known as Wazimbo. At 79 years old, Wazimbo continues to be one of the most iconic figures in Mozambican popular music, carrying with him a trajectory full of successes, authenticity, and love for the cultural roots of Mozambique.
Born in the Mafalala neighborhood of Maputo, Wazimbo moved as a child to Chibuto, in Gaza Province, where, in 1964, he began his musical journey with the group "Silverstars" alongside Miguel Matsinhe and Hortêncio Langa. This was just the beginning of a career that would lead him to win hearts both inside and outside of Mozambique.
After returning to Maputo in the late 1960s, Wazimbo joined the group Geysers, gaining recognition by participating in the music Olympics, where he won fourth place. His talent and passion for music propelled him to take a step further, and in 1972 he signed his first contract as a professional musician, performing in Angola alongside great local artists and standing out as a promising young talent.
His contribution to Mozambican music was consolidated in the 70s with the formation of the legendary Grupo RM, an initiative that included renowned musicians such as Sox, Zeca Tcheco and Milagre Langa. Under the leadership of Rafael Maguni, the group was fundamental in valuing the country's cultural roots and in creating a sound that marked Mozambican popular music.
Today, as he turns 79, Wazimbo remains a cultural icon, an inspiration for new generations, and an unmistakable voice that resonates with the essence of Mozambique. May this birthday be marked by health, joy, and the certainty that his legacy continues to shine.
Happy birthday, Wazimbo! Thank you for every note, every lyric, and for making Mozambican music a true work of art.
