Riots in Chimoio and Pemba: Mozambican Football League Expresses Solidarity and Launches Inquiry

The Mozambican Football League expressed solidarity with all victims of the riots that occurred at matches in Chimoio and Pemba, which resulted in scenes of violence and the use of tear gas to disperse the crowds. Among those affected were club members, refereeing teams, and, in particular, sports journalists hit by the smoke from tear gas grenades fired by the police.

In Chimoio, at the Soalpo field, Desportivo de Nacala hosted and lost to the Black Bulls 2-1. After the game, riots broke out, culminating in the referees being stoned, leading to police intervention and the use of tear gas. In Pemba, a similar incident occurred during the game between Baía de Pemba and Ferroviário de Nampula, also resulting in clashes and the use of police force to control the situation.

Action by the Mozambican Football League

The Mozambican Football League issued a statement ordering match officials in Chimoio and Pemba to submit detailed reports on the events and possible causes of the riots. The League also requested that the National Football Refereeing Commission (CNAF) open an investigation to determine whether refereeing decisions may have contributed to the negative spectator reactions.

Appeal to the National Police

The League also called on the National Police to use measures proportionate to the severity of the events when intervening in cases of disorder on football pitches. Police action should avoid increasing the risk of human and material damage, ensuring safety and tranquility in stadiums.

Solidarity and Commitment

The Mozambican Football League reaffirms its commitment to the safety of all those involved in Mozambican football and is determined to take the necessary measures to prevent such incidents from happening again. Our solidarity with the victims is accompanied by concrete actions to investigate and hold those responsible accountable, promoting a safe and fair environment for the practice of the sport in the country.

The events in Chimoio and Pemba highlight the need for more effective security management at sporting events, ensuring that football continues to be a space for fun and passion, free from violence and disorder.
