Sporting Clube de Portugal recently rejected a €15 million offer from a Saudi Arabian club for the transfer of young Mozambican winger Geny Catamo. The decision, led by the club's management under Frederico Varandas, reflects the player's increasing value, with Sporting setting a minimum transfer fee of €25 million.
This decision comes after another rejection, this time of a €12 million offer from Valencia, Spain. Geny Catamo's value has increased exponentially since last season, when the player was valued at around €600,000, according to the Transfermarkt website. Today, his market value is estimated at €10 million, a result of consistent and growing performance in the 2023/2024 season.
Catamo, who recorded 41 games, six goals and five assists last season, has played a crucial role in the Sporting team, especially in important games like those against Benfica. His adaptation to the new left wing position, following Nuno Santos' injury, and the rise of Geovany Quenda on the right wing, have helped solidify his place in the starting lineup.
The winger recently renewed his contract with Sporting until June 2028, raising his release clause to €60 million, further strengthening his position at the club.
Besides Sporting, other clubs interested in the possible sale of Catamo include Amora and Black Bulls, which hold 75% of the player's economic rights, with 85% of those 75% belonging to Black Bulls. These clubs expect to obtain a significant financial return, with Amora estimating revenue of around €3 million, of which €2.55 million would go to Black Bulls. However, any negotiation can only take place with the consent of Sporting, which holds the player's sporting rights.
Geny Catamo's situation reflects his growing importance in European and Mozambican football, being one of the most promising players of his generation. His career is being closely followed by both international clubs and his current rights holders, all attentive to the potential financial impact of a future transfer.
