Today marks the start of Operation “COSAFA Beach Soccer” for the Mozambique National Beach Soccer Team as they prepare for the COSAFA Cup, scheduled to take place in Durban, South Africa, from March 17-24. With only 21 days remaining until the start of the regional tournament, the national team is gathering at the Maputo Municipal Arena, located on Costa do Sol beach, to begin their intensive training.
This return to competition is eagerly awaited, especially after two years of inactivity due to various challenges, including the global pandemic. However, the team is determined to put on a strong performance in the COSAFA Cup and make an impressive showing in this regional tournament.
However, the national team faces significant challenges, including the absence of former coach Abineiro Ussaca, regional champion in 2021, whose contract ended in March of last year. Ussaca, in addition to being internationally recognized as one of the 12 best beach soccer coaches in the world in 2021 by Beach Soccer WorldWide, also led the Mozambique national team to a historic achievement.
Under Ussaca's leadership, Mozambique's national beach soccer team won the runner-up title at the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations in Senegal, thus securing a place in the sport's "World Cup" in Russia for the first time in the country's history. His departure leaves a void in the team, but also a legacy of success and inspiration for players and future coaches.
Despite the challenges and changes in technical leadership, the national team is determined to honor Ussaca's legacy and represent Mozambique with pride and determination in the COSAFA Cup. With an intense preparation period ahead, the players are ready to give their best and achieve positive results in this important regional tournament.
As Mozambique's national beach soccer team prepares to face their opponents in the COSAFA Cup, the entire country is united in support and cheering for their success. May this journey be marked by memorable moments, exceptional performances and, above all, a renewed pride in the talent and determination of our beach soccer players.
