Josina Machel, daughter of Mozambique's first President, Samora Moisés Machel, used social media to commemorate what would have been her father's 92nd birthday, had he been alive. In an emotionally charged post, she shared personal memories and the longing that remains since his passing in 1986.
“Congratulations in heaven and on earth, Dad. You came, you served, and you left. After all this time, I still cry on days like today… I wish I could play with your beard, sing together, and hug you endlessly. Happy birthday, Dad,” Josina wrote.

The publication was accompanied by a historic photograph, taken on September 25, 1980, when the rank of Marshal of the Armed Forces – the highest in the Mozambican military hierarchy – was awarded to Samora Machel, as part of the institutionalization of ranks and awards in the Defense and Security Forces.
Samora Machel, a charismatic leader and central figure in the national liberation struggle, lost his life on October 19, 1986, in Mbuzini, following a plane crash. Despite his untimely death, he continues to be remembered as a symbol of Mozambique's independence, unity, and sovereignty.
Today, 39 years after his death, Samora's memory remains alive in new generations, not only through official history, but also in the intimate and affectionate testimony of his family.
