Today, Felix Manguane, better known in the music scene as Refila Boy, turns 39. A native of Chókwè, in the Gaza province, Refila is recognized as one of the biggest names in social intervention music in Mozambique, whose career is marked by both artistic talent and controversial arrests.
Since beginning his musical journey in 2003, Refila Boy has used music as a tool for social denunciation, addressing sensitive topics such as corruption, injustice, and the problems affecting ordinary citizens. His discography currently includes five albums, all of which are highly critical and inspired by events in Mozambican society.
But Refila's courage in speaking out wasn't always well received by the authorities. Throughout his career, he was arrested three times, all related to the content of his lyrics. In 2008, he spent six months in prison for singing about corruption in the traffic police. In another notable episode, he was arrested during a performance in Chibuto. His latest arrest sparked public outcry: after two months in prison, the public rallied to demand his release, a clear demonstration of support for the artist.

Beyond music, Refila Boy has demonstrated versatility and an entrepreneurial spirit. He launched his own line of wines, Lee-Brembo, which is sold both in Mozambique and neighboring South Africa. The brand has become a symbol of resistance and cultural identity, reflecting the singer's combative spirit.
In 2019, Refila attempted to expand her voice into politics by running for a seat in parliament during the Gaza province's local elections. Although she failed to secure the seat, her campaign was seen as a natural extension of her musical activism.
Today, celebrating his 39th birthday, Refila Boy remains true to his principles and continues to use his art as a weapon to raise awareness. His journey proves that, even in the face of adversity, it is possible to resist, create, and inspire.
