THE COUNTRY SAYS GOODBYE TO CHUDE MONDLANE

Today, the Mozambique-China Cultural Center in Maputo is the setting for the wake of renowned singer-songwriter Jennifer Chude Mondlane. Since Wednesday, a book of condolences has been available for everyone to pay their respects to the artist who passed away on June 24th in South Africa, after suffering from illness.

Chude Mondlane, daughter of Janet and Eduardo Mondlane, founder and first president of the Mozambique Liberation Front (FRELIMO), was born 66 years ago in New York, United States, but has always considered Mozambique her true home. Her musical career is marked by the fusion of diverse rhythms, including jazz, soul, funk, gospel, samba, salsa, and Mozambican musical styles such as makwayela and marrabenta. In addition to her musical career, Chude also excelled in experimental theater.

Trained in choreography, modern dance, and voice in Philadelphia, where she excelled as a soloist with a dance company, Chude furthered her studies in classical ballet in Moscow, Russia. Her artistic career is marked by awards at international festivals and collaborations with major names in world music, such as Hugh Masekela, Abdullah Ibrahim, Roberta Flack, Marcus Miller, Lenny White, Gito Baloi, and Vocal Deliria.
With a life divided between Mozambique, South Africa, and the United States, Chude Mondlane also had degrees in Anthropology and African Studies. Her passing leaves a huge void in Mozambican and global culture, but her musical and artistic legacy will continue to inspire future generations. Today, the country bids farewell with sadness, but also with immense pride in having counted an artist of such magnitude in its history.
