Mozambique's national football team, the Mambas, has achieved a significant rise in the FIFA rankings following its performance in the first rounds of qualifying for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (CAN). Mozambique climbed five positions, now ranking among the top 99 teams in the world, thanks to a series of positive results in the qualifiers.
Performance in the Qualifiers
The Mambas began their qualifying campaign with an away draw against Mali, considered one of the strongest opponents in the group. This result, achieved away from home, was crucial for the team's morale, which was followed by a 2-1 home win against Guinea-Bissau, in a match played at the Zimpeto National Stadium.
These four points obtained in the first two rounds boosted Mozambique not only in the race for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, but also in the FIFA ranking, consolidating its position among the highest-ranked teams on the continent.
Importance of Moving Up in the Ranking
Mozambique's rise in the FIFA rankings reflects the growth and evolution of national football. By entering the top 100 world teams, the Mambas gain greater visibility on the international stage, as well as increasing the team's confidence and attracting more attention to Mozambican football talent.
This progress also reinforces the team's ability to compete on equal terms against stronger opponents, a factor that will be crucial for success in the next qualifying rounds and in the continental tournament itself.
Upcoming Challenges
With their rise in the rankings and a good start in the qualifying phase, the Mambas have the opportunity to continue building on these results in the upcoming matches against the Eswatini national team, scheduled for October 2024. The expectation is that the national coach, Chiquinho Conde, will maintain his focus on the balance between experience and youth, which has proven effective so far.
The Mambas now face the challenge of maintaining consistency and securing their place in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, aiming not only to qualify for the tournament but also to surpass their best previous performances on the continental stage.
