Mia Couto wins the 2024 FIL Prize for Literature in Romance Languages.

Mozambican writer Mia Couto was awarded the 2024 FIL Prize for Literature in Romance Languages yesterday, one of the most prestigious literary awards. This prize is awarded annually by the Guadalajara International Book Fair in Mexico and recognizes writers who excel in languages derived from Latin, such as Portuguese, Spanish, Italian, French, and Romanian.

Mia Couto, known for his literary work that intertwines Mozambican culture with a unique and poetic language, takes home a monetary prize of 150,000 dollars, equivalent to approximately 9 million meticais. This recognition further solidifies Couto's position as one of the greatest writers of the Portuguese-speaking world and highlights the importance of his contribution to world literature.

The FIL Prize, created in 1991, has already been awarded to renowned authors such as António Lobo Antunes, Nélida Piñon, and Emmanuel Carrère, standing out as a platform for the promotion and appreciation of literature in Romance languages. For Mia Couto, this prize adds to a series of international recognitions, including the Camões Prize, which he received in 2013, consolidating his trajectory as one of the most influential voices in contemporary literature.
