The Paris 2024 Olympic Games are about to begin, and Mozambique, the pearl of the Indian Ocean, will be present with a delegation of 7 athletes competing in 5 different sports. Highlights include swimming and boxing, with two athletes in each discipline.
In boxing, Mozambique will be represented by Alcinda Panguana and Tiago Muxanga. In swimming, Denise Donnely and Matthew Lawrence will carry the country's colors to the Olympic waters. Athletics will feature 18-year-old Steven Sabino, while Deizy Nhaquile will compete in sailing and Jacira Ferreira in judo.
This event is an opportunity for Mozambique to shine once again on the international stage and continue the legacy left by Lurdes Mutola, the legendary athlete who won two Olympic medals for the country: a gold in 2000 and a bronze in 1996. Mutola was the first athlete to bring an Olympic gold medal to Mozambique and to a Portuguese-speaking African country.
The opening ceremony of the Olympic Games will be held this Friday, July 26th, along the Seine River and past iconic landmarks of the French capital, such as Notre-Dame Cathedral and the Louvre Museum. Scheduled to begin at 7:30 PM, the spectacle will feature approximately 7,000 athletes, including seven Mozambicans, who will parade in 85 boats along a six-kilometer route on the Seine.
May the Paris Olympic Games bring many achievements and more medals to Mozambique.
