Sporting is committed to securing the future of some of its most promising talents, and the first in line to renew his contract is Geny Catamo. The 22-year-old Mozambican winger, who has been excelling in the green and white team, is about to extend his contract with the club. With the exploratory phase of negotiations already completed, the expectation is that the renewal will be finalized in 2023, possibly in November.
Geny Catamo, who was loaned to Sporting by Amora in 2019 and subsequently signed permanently in 2020, has a remarkable progression story. After spells at Vitória de Guimarães and Marítimo, the talented player showed his worth during pre-season and earned a place in Sporting's first team. Initially considered an alternative option at full-back, Catamo is now shining as a winger.
Catamo's renewal will involve a three-year extension to his current contract, which was due to end in 2025, now running until 2028. Furthermore, his previously modest salary will be increased to a level closer to 500,000 euros gross annually. The release clause will remain at 60 million euros, which is the new benchmark value for midfielders and forwards, as the Frederico Varandas administration has established a revised upward table.
Geny Catamo's performance on the pitch this season has been remarkable. The player, initially considered a secondary player, has earned his place in the main squad and has participated in all ten games played by Sporting in 2023/2024. This consistency includes eight league games and two Europa League games, totaling 349 minutes on the pitch. He also started on two occasions, contributing to Sporting's victories over Vizela and Sturm Graz.
Geny Catamo began the season sharing the right wing with Ricardo Esgaio, but in recent games, against Atalanta and Arouca, he was moved forward, where he demonstrated his true potential. This versatility and his solid performance justify the renewal of his contract.
This is just the first of five contract renewal processes that Sporting intends to complete, with players like Diomande, Coates, Morita, and Edwards also on the priority list. The renewal of Geny Catamo is an important step in the club's commitment to retaining and developing promising talent, ensuring a bright future in the world of football.
