The Mozambican Basketball Federation (FMB) has secured the necessary internal conditions for the preparation of the senior women's national team, but still faces significant financial challenges to guarantee its participation in the qualifying stage for AfroBasket 2025. The competition, which will take place from February 2nd to 10th in Luanda, Angola, requires an additional effort from the FMB, which needs 10 million Meticais to make the team's presence viable.
Despite the limitations, the FMB has already secured basic resources for the team's training, transportation, and food, allowing preparatory work to progress. The president of the FMB, Paulo Mazivila, highlighted the Federation's commitment, even amidst scarce resources. “We are working with the few resources we have. The most important thing now is to fight to leave Mozambique and create the necessary conditions to compete in Angola. We have some promises of support and we believe we will succeed,” stated Mazivila.
Mazivila revealed that some previously established partnerships faced difficulties, which further hampered the securing of financial resources. However, the official reiterated the FMB's commitment to ensuring Mozambique's presence in the qualifying round, considering the importance of keeping the national team active on the continental stage.
To date, Mozambique and Angola are the only teams confirmed for the FIBA-Africa Zone VI qualifying round. The competition will determine the spots for AfroBasket 2025, which will be held in Ivory Coast in the second half of this year.
With preparations underway and a continuous effort to mobilize the necessary financial resources, the FMB remains hopeful of overcoming adversity and ensuring Mozambique's presence in the continent's most prestigious basketball tournament.
