Today, we celebrate the 59th birthday of Francisco Queriol Conde Júnior, affectionately known as Chiquinho Conde, an icon of Mozambican sports, both as a player and as a coach. Born in the city of Beira on November 22, 1965, Chiquinho is a true ambassador of Mozambican football, having left his mark on and off the field.
A Brilliant Career as a Player
Beginning his career at Maxaquene, where he was the top scorer and champion in 1986, Chiquinho quickly established himself in European football, becoming the first Mozambican to play in a post-independence European championship. He played for renowned clubs such as Belenenses and Vitória de Setúbal (where he is considered an idol), as well as stints in the USA and France.
Among his achievements, the victory in the Portuguese Cup with Belenenses in 1989 and the conquest of the Super Cup with Sporting in 1995 stand out. Representing the national team, he participated in three editions of the CAN (1986, 1996, 1998), ending his career as one of the greatest names in the history of Mozambican football.
A New Era as a Coach
After hanging up his boots, Chiquinho embraced coaching with the same determination that distinguished him as a player. He made history by leading União Desportiva do Songo to the group stage of the CAF Cup in 2018 and winning national titles with Ferroviário de Maputo.
In 2021, he took over as coach of the Mozambican national team, marking the beginning of a historic era. Under his leadership, Mozambique broke a nine-year drought by qualifying for the 2023 African Cup of Nations and, later, the 2024 African Cup of Nations, achieving its best performance ever. In 2025, Chiquinho once again exceeded expectations by securing a spot at the African Cup of Nations in Morocco, cementing his position as one of the best coaches on the African continent.
The Dream of the 2026 World Cup
With three wins in Group G of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, Mozambique is closer to realizing a dream: competing in the World Cup for the first time. Chiquinho Conde, with his tireless spirit and visionary leadership, continues to inspire the Mambas and the entire Mozambican nation.
A Living Legend
Chiquinho is more than a sports icon. He is a symbol of resilience, dedication, and love for his country. His legacy transcends football, serving as an inspiration for future generations.
Today, Mozambique celebrates not just a birthday, but the life of a man who dedicated his career to elevating the country's reputation on the international stage.
Congratulations, Chiquinho Conde! May this new stage be filled with achievements and may your greatest dream, taking Mozambique to the World Cup, come true. Thank you for everything you have done and continue to do for Mozambican sport.
🇲🇿💥 Happy Birthday, Legend!
