After winning Mozambique's first international silver medal in speed skating, skater Donaldo Salvador continues to forge a promising path on the global sporting stage. In England, Salvador secured second place in the 100-meter race and finished 10th in the 42km marathon, competing against more than 70 professional skaters. Now, he returns to competition, this time in Germany, aiming to excel even further.
Donaldo Salvador's journey began on September 7th, when he left Mozambique for England. Upon arriving on the 8th, the skater began his training the very next day, focused on the UK championship, which would take place on September 15th. Salvador participated in two main events: the speed events, where he won the silver medal, and the marathon endurance event.
The First International Medal for Mozambique
The first event was a 100-meter race, demanding explosive strength and extreme speed. The competition began at 9:00 AM with the qualifying rounds, followed by the qualifying rounds at 10:00 AM, and the final round at noon. Donaldo Salvador stood out in the initial stages, finishing first in all the qualifying rounds. In the final event, the Mozambican skater finished in second place, securing the silver medal—the first international medal not only for him but also for Mozambique, a historic achievement in the sport of skating.
42 km Marathon Challenge
After the speed event, Salvador faced the 42km Marathon, competing fiercely with professional skaters from the United Kingdom and Europe. Among more than 70 athletes, the Mozambican showed resilience and finished in 10th place. This result represented another significant milestone in his career, demonstrating not only technical skill but also physical endurance in long-distance events.
Next Challenge: Berlin Marathon
Following his results in England, Donaldo Salvador departed on September 17th for Berlin, Germany, where he arrived the same day. Starting on the 18th, he began his preparation for the prestigious Berlin Marathon, a 42km, 192-meter race scheduled for tomorrow, the 28th. This edition of the marathon celebrates the event's anniversary and will feature big names such as Bart Swings, the Belgian champion with nine consecutive victories, and Felix Rijhnen from Germany.
For Donaldo Salvador, the race promises to be a great challenge, especially with the presence of renowned champions. According to the skater himself, the Berlin marathon is notoriously difficult, with the champion crossing the finish line in less than an hour. Despite this, Salvador remains confident and focused, hoping to achieve a good position in what will be another opportunity to represent Mozambique in international sport.
In an interview with Sport Jogos, the Mozambican athlete highlighted the importance of competing alongside the best and reiterated his desire to make history. With the Berlin Marathon about to take place, Donaldo Salvador continues to demonstrate the spirit of overcoming challenges that has brought him this far. Tomorrow, all eyes will be on the starting line, where once again he will show the world the talent and determination of a Mozambican athlete.
