CHENY WA GUNE TURNS 44 YEARS OLD TODAY

Musician, teacher, composer, performer, music producer and researcher of traditional music, he has been creating traditional and contemporary compositions and exploring the symbiosis between conventional and traditional Mozambican instruments.

Born on August 1, 1980, in the city of Maputo, Cheny Wa Gune comes from a family of musicians, living in Maputo, with strong origins from the Chope people, from the province of Inhambane.

In 1992, he joined the first youth cultural group in the Unidade 7 neighborhood, "Novos Raios," where he learned to dance and play most of Mozambique's traditional and popular dances, supervised by artists from the "National Song and Dance Company." In 1994, he joined the "Ntwananu" cultural group of the Continuadores de Moçambique Organization. In 1997, he founded the "Timbila Muzimba" orchestra band with other young people from the Unidade 7 neighborhood. With this band, Cheny Wa Gune toured extensively in Europe, Asia, and Africa, participating in major festivals, gaining extensive experience and connecting with the artistic world, particularly through artistic collaborations and national and international cultural exchange programs. He works regularly with theater groups, composing soundtracks, as well as for film, advertising, and other opportunities.

In Education: He collaborates with several universities, including Isarc (Higher Institute of Art and Culture) and Eduardo Mondlane University, as a speaker. He has participated in several national and international schools, giving masterclasses in traditional Mozambican music.
In 2007 he founded his solo group “Cheny Wa Gune Quarteto” and recorded an original album in 2010 entitled “Jindji Jindji” which means, to make vibrate, to sound.
He is part of TP50 (a group that brings together music, theater, dance, poetry and video) with a focus on themed concerts and tributes exalting Mozambican music.
