The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has officially announced the dates for the TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations (CHAN) 2024, which will be held from February 1st to 28th, 2025. The announcement was made by CAF President Dr. Patrice Motsepe after the Executive Committee meeting in Nairobi, Kenya, yesterday. The competition will feature national teams composed exclusively of players who play in their countries' domestic leagues.
The qualifying phase will begin on the weekend of October 25-27, 2024, marking the start of the competition for places in the tournament. The 2024 edition of CHAN will be held in East Africa, with Kenya confirmed as the host country. CAF is expected to announce the specific stadiums and venues that will host the matches soon.
During his visit to the preparation sites in Kenya, Dr. Motsepe praised the progress of the works and the Kenyan government's commitment to ensuring the tournament takes place. However, the CAF president stressed the need to accelerate preparations to ensure all facilities are ready on schedule.
Mozambique and Performance in the CHANNEL
Mozambique had a prominent participation in the previous edition of the CHAN, reaching the quarter-finals, which reinforces the growth of Mozambican football on the continental stage. The expectation is that the Mozambican national team will repeat or surpass this performance in the next edition.
Senegal: The Current Champion
Senegal is the defending champion, having won the title in 2022 by defeating Algeria in the final held in Algiers. The Senegalese team, with a solid campaign, will seek to defend its title in the next edition, while the other African teams look to dethrone the champions in pursuit of glory in the CHAN.
This tournament, held every two years, is one of CAF's main competitions and aims to promote local talent by limiting participation to players who play in their national leagues, thus fostering the development of football in African countries.
