Black Bulls Make History and Secure a Spot in the CAF Cup Group Stage After a 7-Year Absence from Mozambique

After a seven-year absence, Mozambique is once again celebrating the presence of a national team in the group stage of an African club tournament. The Associação Black Bulls (ABB), one of the leading powers in Mozambican football, secured its place after a difficult and thrilling journey in the CAF Cup, with its overall victory over Otohô d'Oyo of Congo.

In the decisive match, played today in Brazzaville, Black Bulls faced intense pressure from the home team and the opposing fans. Even with a 2-1 defeat, the 1-0 aggregate score from the first leg in Maputo was enough to secure the historic passage of the Mozambicans to the group stage. ABB's goal, scored in the 77th minute, seemed to have settled the tie, but the game took a dramatic turn in the final minutes. In the 90th minute, the referee awarded a controversial penalty to Otohô d'Oyo, a decision that generated protests even from the Congolese team's supporters. The penalty was converted, and shortly afterwards, the hosts scored the winning goal, but it wasn't enough to prevent the Mozambican celebrations.

The heroic performance of goalkeeper Hernâni, also a starter for the national team, was decisive in allowing Black Bulls to maintain control of the tie. On several occasions throughout the game, Hernâni stood out with spectacular saves, preventing Otohô d'Oyo from extending their lead and ensuring the survival of the Mozambican dream.

Black Bulls' journey to the group stage began promisingly. In the first qualifying round, the club faced Alizé Fort from Comoros and delivered a resounding victory. In the first leg, ABB won 7-0, and in the return leg, they gave their opponent no chance, winning 4-0, for an impressive aggregate score of 11-0. These results boosted the team's confidence, and they entered the next round determined to face Otohô d'Oyo.

In the first leg of the second round, played in Maputo, Black Bulls emerged victorious with a 1-0 scoreline, a result that, although narrow, proved vital to the outcome of the tie. The single goal secured ABB an important advantage, which they managed well even in their narrow defeat in Brazzaville.

With this qualification, Black Bulls puts Mozambique back on the continental football map, becoming the first Mozambican team in seven years to reach the group stage of an African competition. This achievement is even more significant given the competitive level of the CAF Cup and the challenges faced throughout the campaign.

Now, with their place secured, Black Bulls are preparing for new challenges, carrying with them the hope and pride of millions of Mozambicans. Mozambique's return to the group stage of a continental tournament is a milestone not only for the club, but for national football as a whole, inspiring future generations and reaffirming the country's potential on the African stage.
