Women's Basketball: Mozambique Climbs the FIBA World Ranking

The Mozambique Women's National Senior Basketball Team rose one place in the FIBA world rankings, according to the latest update released on August 26. This advancement occurred after the team participated in the pre-qualification round for the 2026 FIFA Women's Basketball World Cup in Germany.

During the pre-qualifying round, held in Mexico City, the national team played three matches. Mozambique faced the host country, Mexico, winning 71-65, but suffered defeats against Montenegro, 52-74, and New Zealand, 63-79. Despite the challenges, the results were enough to propel Mozambique to 32nd place in the world rankings, where it now has 215.6 points.

This progress also allowed Mozambique to maintain its fourth position in the African continental rankings, where Nigeria leads with 631 points, ranking eighth worldwide. The D'Tigers' rise in the global rankings, entering the top 10, is due to their remarkable campaign at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, where they reached the quarterfinals.

Globally, the United States continues to dominate the rankings, with 883.3 points. France also stood out, rising to third place after an impressive campaign that took them to the Olympic Games final, where they won the silver medal. Germany, meanwhile, made history by reaching the quarterfinals in its Olympic debut, rising eight places to 13th in the rankings. Serbia also improved its position, advancing from 10th to 9th place after its quarterfinal appearance at Paris 2024.

With this advancement in the world rankings, the Mozambique National Team demonstrates continued progress on the international stage, reflecting the potential and determination of its players in high-level competitions.
