Activist Clemente Carlos participates in a conference on the right to peaceful protest alongside Dr. Iveth Mafundza

The rapper and social activist Dr. Iveth Mafundza and the reporter and activist Clemente Carlos recently participated in a conference promoted by RMDDH – Mozambican Network of Human Rights Defenders, a crucial event for the debate on the challenges faced in exercising the right to peaceful demonstration in Mozambique.

Under the theme “Defending Democracy: The Right to Peaceful Demonstration in Mozambique and the Challenges of Repression”, the conference brought together several human rights defenders, coordinated by the team led by the president of RMDDH, Professor Adriano Nuvunga, even if he was not physically present.

The meeting discussed urgent issues such as the growing repression, arbitrary detentions and the criminalization of dissent, which have limited freedom of expression and civic participation in the country. Dr. Iveth Mafundza highlighted the importance of peaceful demonstration as a legitimate right of any democratic society, while Clemente Carlos expressed, through social media, the honor of having been part of the event and his commitment to the fight for human rights.

In addition to the debates, the conference also marked the launch of the Annual Report on the Situation of Human Rights Defenders in Mozambique – 2024, a document that exposes violations and challenges faced by activists in the last year.
