The Journey of “On the March”: Iveth's Music and Her Creative Challenges

“Em Marcha” is more than just a song. It’s a work that carries with it a story of dedication, social reflection, and artistic innovation. Mozambican rapper Iveth began writing the lyrics in 2019, with the first part of the composition, and only in December 2023 did she finalize the creative process, closing the cycle of a song that demanded a lot of abstraction and deep involvement with the themes addressed.

The initial idea for the song came from the characteristic sound of marching boots, which inspired the title "Em Marcha" (On the March). The beat, which evoked the sound of people or soldiers marching, was key for Iveth to understand the concept behind the track: a metaphor for the challenges and crises faced by Mozambican society. The choice of title was a way to represent this movement, suggesting that society, in the face of its problems, was inevitably moving forward, although often towards an uncertain destination.

The collaboration with producer Maldine, whom Iveth describes as a "genius," was essential in shaping the music. The producer, introduced to Iveth by Bruno Ramos – a long-time friend and responsible for the cover design of the rapper's first album, O Convite – brought an innovative perspective to the production, giving the music a unique form. During the recording process, Iveth had access to two proposed sounds: "Em Marcha" and "Rino." It was the first option, however, that captured her attention, leading her to develop the lyrics with a futuristic feel, inspired by the style of other big names in Mozambican rap, such as Azagaia, Izlo, and Rage.

The sound of “Em Marcha” is a reflection on the problems of Mozambican society and the social challenges that shape daily life. Iveth's composition demanded an above-average level of abstraction, where she had to distance herself from her personal experience and delve into the complexity of the country's social issues. It is a work of futurism, in which Iveth seeks to present a critical and reflective view of Mozambican reality, just as other rap artists have done, such as Azagaia with his discography, Izlo in “Dinheiro do Povo” and Rage in “O que é que vais fazer?”.

The music video, filmed in August 2023, was a visual complement that expresses the intensity and messages of the song. The preparation for the new album Entre(tanto), which will feature "Em Marcha" as one of the main tracks, was a crucial phase for Iveth. The video, produced with the same intensity as the music, brought even more life to the artistic proposal, presenting strong images that reflect social problems and the constant struggle of society.

“Em Marcha” is undoubtedly a milestone in Iveth's career. The song and its creation story reveal the artist's commitment to making music with a purpose. Through careful composition, Iveth used her art to question society, incite reflection, and at the same time offer a critical and visionary perspective on the direction the country is taking. As always, the Mozambican rapper remains true to her essence as a socially engaged artist, addressing profound themes with a touch of innovation and irreverence.
