An influential and often controversial figure in South African politics, Mabuza served as the country's vice president between 2018 and 2023, during the presidency of Cyril Ramaphosa. Prior to that, he had a long political career marked by dominance in the province of Mpumalanga, where he was prime minister and consolidated strong regional power within the ANC.

Known by his nickname “The Cat”"—a reference to his political survival skills and his alleged involvement in behind-the-scenes maneuvering—Mabuza left a complex legacy, alternating between a reputation as a quiet strategist and criticism involving allegations of corruption and internal manipulation.

After leaving his position as vice-president in 2023, he remained more distant from national political life, but continued to be a relevant figure in internal party discussions.

His passing brings an important chapter to a close in the recent history of South African politics, leaving behind a trail of reflections on power, loyalty, and the challenges of the country's democratic transition.
