DJ Ardiles and the Living Example of the Valorization of Mozambican Identity

At the book launch event for writer and singer Tchakaze, one gesture particularly caught the attention of those present: DJ Ardiles, a key figure in Mozambican music, not only attended but also made a point of standing out as a true ambassador of local culture. Wearing a "Denovo" shirt, owned by fellow Mozambican singer Tabasilly, Ardiles demonstrated with simplicity and pride the power of consuming and promoting what is ours.

In addition to providing visual support for local fashion, Ardiles acquired Tchakaze's book, directly contributing to the strengthening of national literature and artistic production by Mozambicans. At a time when foreign works often receive more acclaim than domestic ones, seeing recognized artists support each other and celebrate local talent is an act that deserves widespread recognition and reflection.

This example raises a series of important questions that invite all of us, as citizens and cultural consumers, to think about our role in valuing what is made by Mozambican hands:

  • What if we all started wearing more local brands and consuming more art made by Mozambicans?
  • What impact would this have on strengthening our cultural identity?
  • Do we give due value to national creators and artists while they are alive and active?
  • How can we encourage young people to look at Mozambican culture with pride and interest?
  • What inspires you more: a renowned international brand or a local brand that tells your story?
  • Are we doing enough to support the growth of our literature, music, fashion, and other cultural expressions?
  • At what point did we lose the habit of “consuming Mozambican” and how can we get it back?
