First Lady strengthens partnership with Lurdes Mutola to empower girls through sports

Mozambique's First Lady, Gueta Chapo, met with former Olympic champion Lurdes Mutola this Tuesday, May 20, in Maputo, in an audience focused on strengthening the partnership between her office and the Lurdes Mutola Foundation (FLM). The meeting aimed to deepen joint initiatives for the development of national sports and the empowerment of vulnerable girls.

During the meeting, Mutola invited the First Lady to participate in two competitions as part of the celebrations for the 50th anniversary of the Cahora Bassa Hydroelectric Plant and National Independence. The events will take place in Chimoio on May 30th and in Songo on June 23rd, the latter being considered the grand finale.

More than just competitions, the events are seen as instruments of social transformation, focusing on promoting women's soccer and athletics—sports central to the FLM's philosophy. The former Olympic athlete argued that sports can help combat issues like teen pregnancies, opening up new opportunities for Mozambican girls.

The partnership is also based on social and educational initiatives. Gueta Chapo highlighted his office's work in awarding scholarships to girls, both domestically and abroad. The Mutola Foundation has implemented projects such as "Desporto da Vida," "Mutola Legends," and the "Copa Mutola," in addition to building foster homes for girls in Magude.

The hearing reaffirmed the two institutions' commitment to the development of Mozambican youth, combining sport with education and social protection as pathways to gender equality and inclusion.
