Mozambican saxophonist Moreira Chonguiça celebrates another year of life today, solidifying his position as one of the most influential figures in jazz in Mozambique and beyond. With a career marked by innovation and commitment to culture, Chonguiça has been a true ambassador for Mozambican jazz on the international stage.
Over the years, the artist has built an impressive musical legacy, with acclaimed albums such as The Moreira Project Vol 1 – The Journey (2005), Citizen of the World (2009) and Sensations (2014). His collaboration with the legendary Manu Dibango on the album M&M (2017) reaffirmed his position as one of the great names in African jazz.
In addition to his discography, Chonguiça has actively contributed to the promotion of jazz music in Mozambique. In 2010, he founded the Morejazz festival, which not only brought great artists to Maputo, but also boosted the training of young musicians through masterclasses at Eduardo Mondlane University.
Today, as he celebrates another year of life, Moreira Chonguiça continues to be an inspiration for the new generation of Mozambican musicians, showing that music is a powerful tool for identity and cultural expression.
