This Thursday, Josina Machel, daughter of former Mozambican first lady Graça Machel, shared a message on social media to commemorate the 11th anniversary of Nelson Mandela's death. Accompanying a photo with Mandela, Josina wrote: "11 years without you, Papa."“
Josina, the biological daughter of Graça Machel and Samora Machel, also considers Nelson Mandela her father. This is due to her mother's marriage to the South African leader after the death of Samora, Mozambique's first president. This union not only strengthened ties between Mozambique and South Africa but also created a paternal relationship between Mandela and Graça's children.
For Josina, living with Mandela represented more than a family relationship; it was an opportunity to learn from one of the greatest icons in African history. In previous interviews, she highlighted the impact of Mandela's gentle and resilient character on her personal development and the way she approaches life and social challenges.
Nelson Mandela, known as "Madiba," was a central figure in the fight against apartheid and the reconciliation process in South Africa. He passed away on December 5, 2013, leaving a legacy of leadership, forgiveness, and the fight for social justice. Josina's tribute reflects the deep personal connection she had with Mandela, going beyond the political and historical connection.
