Mambas on Alert: Protests Could Jeopardize Mozambique's Qualification for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

Mozambique's national football team, known as the Mambas, faces a delicate moment on the eve of one of the most important matches in their journey towards the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (CAN). Next Friday, November 15th, the Mambas will face Mali at the Zimpeto National Stadium, in the fifth round of Group I qualifying. However, the match is at risk due to a wave of peaceful demonstrations planned for the preparation period and on the day of the game itself.

The threat of a CAF sanction

Amid the current climate of unrest in Maputo, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) has warned the Mozambican Football Federation (FMF) and the Government of Mozambique about the importance of ensuring complete security during the event. According to a CAF statement, any abnormality that compromises the safety of teams, referees, or spectators will not be treated as a "force majeure event," resulting in a direct sanction against the Mambas, who would forfeit the match due to a lack of security conditions.

Given the shared lead in Group I, with Mozambique and Mali tied on 8 points, a technical defeat would seriously jeopardize Mozambique's dream of qualifying for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

Government Security and Mobility Guarantees

The Mozambican Football Federation (FMF) and the Mozambican government have already mobilized to prevent the worst. The Secretary of State for Sport, Carlos Gilberto Mendes, highlighted that the authorities, including the Ministries of the Interior and Defense, are actively working to guarantee the safety of everyone involved, ensuring the necessary tranquility for the game. “The moments of unrest will have passed, and I don't believe that political issues will jeopardize such an important moment as this, in which the national team is at stake,” stated Mendes, emphasizing the joint effort to provide a safe environment.

Mali Arrives in Maputo in the Middle of Tension

Part of the Malian delegation has been in the Mozambican capital since last Sunday, beginning their preparations for the decisive match. Aware of the importance of the game, the Malian team arrived early to adjust to the local environment and is awaiting security guarantees for the match in Zimpeto.

The Determination of Mozambique and the Passion of the Fans

The atmosphere of anticipation among Mozambican fans is high, with hopes that the situation will remain calm and that the game can proceed as normal, allowing the Mambas to keep their qualification ambitions alive. The demonstrations, although peaceful, coincide with a period of great importance for national football, and the government hopes that, with the efforts of the security forces, it will be possible to hold the event without setbacks.

A Decisive Game

On Friday, with the stadium packed with supporters, the Mambas will have the opportunity to demonstrate their talent and determination against a direct rival. With a victory, Mozambique could take a crucial step towards qualifying for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations. Until then, fans and authorities hope that peace and security will be restored so that the Mambas can play without external interference and with the hopes of the entire country behind them.
