Mozambique's under-20 national team's campaign in the 2024 COSAFA Cup came to a disappointing end with their elimination in the group stage. The Mambinhas failed to secure a single victory in their three matches, accumulating three consecutive defeats and being knocked out of the competition without any chance of advancing to the next phase, having been eliminated after the second game.
In the first match, Mozambique faced Eswatini in a thrilling clash that ended in a 5-4 defeat. Although they managed a temporary turnaround in the score, the Mambinhas couldn't hold onto the lead and ultimately suffered a setback, missing an opportunity to start the tournament with points.
In the second game, against Lesotho, the Mozambican team once again took the lead, scoring the first goal of the match, but ended up suffering another setback. The final result was 2-1 in favor of the opponent, which sealed the early elimination of the Mambinhas from the tournament, as they no longer had any mathematical chance of advancing.
With morale already shaken, Mozambique took to the field today for their final group stage match against Zimbabwe. The team managed to hold a goalless draw until halftime, but early in the second half conceded a goal that determined the final result: 1-0 in favor of Zimbabwe. This outcome sealed the Mambinhas' journey in the tournament with a record of 7 goals conceded and only 5 scored.
The campaign ends without victories, leaving Mozambique needing to reflect on its mistakes and work to strengthen the next generation of young players.
