Following a 5-4 defeat to Eswatini in the opening match of the COSAFA U-20 Championship, Mozambican coach Dário Faife expressed his frustration with his team's performance. The match, held at the Tchumene Sports Complex, was a real test for the young Mambinhas, who failed to perform to the expected standard, despite having scored first.
In his post-match statements, Faife admitted that he "didn't know his players" due to their underwhelming performance, especially defensively. "What the players produced isn't what we've been working on," the coach lamented, acknowledging that the central defensive duo, which had been one of the most consistent during training, ended up making mistakes that Eswatini capitalized on.

Faife highlighted that repeated defensive errors, including those committed by the goalkeeper, compromised the game's strategy. Despite taking the lead, Mozambique couldn't maintain the momentum and eventually succumbed to pressure from the opposing counterattacks. "The team lost track of what we had planned," the coach observed, frustrated by their inability to maintain their lead.

Despite the negative result, Faife expressed optimism regarding the upcoming matches and emphasized the importance of his players' psychological recovery so they can return stronger for the next match. "I think the biggest preparation now should be psychological," said Faife, emphasizing that the team needs to recover emotionally after such a heavy defeat.
The Mozambican team still has two games left in the COSAFA U-20 group stage, and the coach is confident they can regain their footing and reach the next stage of the competition. "The first objective is to advance to the next stage," he explained, stating that, once that goal is achieved, the focus will be on qualifying for the African Nations Championship (ANC), as the two finalists of the tournament qualify for the ANC U-20.
Mozambique's next match will be on Saturday, and Faife believes that with a good emotional recovery and corrections to defensive flaws, the team can reorganize and regain focus. "We believe we have the ability to reach the next stage," the coach reaffirmed.
Now, Mozambique's U-20 team has a clear mission: to forget their mistakes and focus on what they do best. Their journey in the COSAFA U-20 tournament isn't over yet, and the Mambinhas are determined to turn their fortunes around.
