Mambinhas begin their journey in the COSAFA U-20 Cup in search of their second title.

The Mozambique and Eswatini national under-20 football teams face off today at 3:00 PM at the Tchumene Sports Complex in Matola municipality, in one of the most anticipated matches of the COSAFA Under-20 Cup. The match marks the start of the first round of Group A in the men's football competition, a tournament that brings together 12 teams from the southern African region.

For the first time, Mozambique has the honor of hosting the tournament in this category, and the team led by Sérgio Faife Matsolo is determined to win its second COSAFA U-20 title. The Mozambican team hopes to repeat the feat achieved in 2020, when they won the trophy in South Africa, and secure a place in the U-20 Africa Cup of Nations next year.

The continental tournament will not only be a great opportunity for the country's young talents, but will also serve as a qualifying stage for the FIFA U-20 World Cup, which will be held in Chile. This ambitious goal further fuels the motivation of the "Mambinhas" for this competition.

Start of the Journey of Group A

The match between Mozambique and Eswatini will be the second of the afternoon, with the first match of Group “A” being played at 12:00 between Zimbabwe and Botswana, at the same venue. The group stage of the COSAFA Under-20 Cup consists of three groups of four teams each, with the top team from each group and the best second-placed team advancing to the semi-finals.

The competition, which showcases the region's young talent, holds great significance for the "Mambinhas," the current runners-up. In 2022, Mozambique lost 1-0 to Zambia in the final of a tournament held in the Kingdom of Eswatini. Now, playing at home, the team seeks to rectify the past outcome and lift the trophy.

With the support of the local public and focused preparation, Mozambique has the chance to shine on its own soil and establish itself as one of the emerging powers in Under-20 football in the region.
