Two hundred thousand dollars are the Achilles' heel that conditions Mozambique's presence in Mexico.

The participation of the Mozambique Women's Senior National Basketball Team in the 2026 World Championship Qualifying Tournament, to be held in Mexico from August 19 to 25, is at risk due to financial difficulties. The required amount for participation is two hundred thousand US dollars, intended for airfare and event logistics.

After hiring a new coach and meeting with all the players of the national team, including those who play in Europe and the United States, such as Tamara Seda, Célia Sumbana, Delma Zita, and Chanaya Pinto, the team trained intensively in the city of Maputo. However, with only six days left until the start of the tournament, the Mozambican Basketball Federation (FMB) faces significant financial challenges. The president of the FMB, Paulo Mazivila, announced that the lack of resources could lead to the team's withdrawal.

Mazivila revealed that negotiations are underway with the government and other partners to secure the necessary funding. However, even if the funds are obtained, logistical problems could prevent the team from traveling to the tournament in time.

The FMB president also mentioned that, despite the funds supposedly made available by the multinational TotalEnergies, he did not want to comment on the matter at the moment, promising a new press conference to discuss more details. It is worth remembering that Mozambique had already failed a preparatory stage in the US due to financial difficulties.

It should be noted that last week the team was supposed to travel to the United States for a pre-competition training camp, but was unable to do so due to a lack of financial resources.
