Kaizer Chiefs defender Edmilson Dove has clarified his decision to join the Mozambique national team for the COSAFA Cup instead of returning to pre-season with his club. The 29-year-old is part of a Mambas youth team in Gqeberha and will face South Africa in their opening game on Wednesday, before taking on eSwatini and Botswana.
Dove told SABC Sport that he was invited by the national team's coaching staff to consider being a senior figure for the tournament, and he accepted, despite the arrival of a new coaching staff at Naturena.
“Obviously, I feel that, as football players, this is probably the highest stage of our careers, to be here and represent our nation,” said Dove.
“"It's not just about me, but obviously the coach spoke to me, and he told me his ideas and what he expected from me, and obviously I'm more than willing to be here to help.".
“"Obviously, the situation at the club is a bit complicated, but I think it's something I'll think about when I get back and rejoin the team."”
The defender was also included in Mozambique's squad for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) earlier this year and is emphatic in saying that turning his back on his country is never an option.
“"You know, every time I'm called upon to represent the national team, we have to be willing to say yes and come here and give our best," he added.
“We are representing more than 30 million Mozambicans; it’s not just about ourselves, as I said. It’s an honor to be here and represent the nation.”.
“"So, I'm just one player among all those that the coaches could have selected, who would come here and add value, and I hope we can do a good job."”
