Today's date marks a moment of great significance for Mozambique, a country that 60 years ago began its march towards freedom. It was in 1964 that courageous men and women, motivated by an ardent desire for liberation, embarked on a struggle that would culminate in the independence of Mozambique, officially achieved in 1975. This is the legacy we celebrate on this Day of the Armed Forces of Mozambique, a tribute to the heroes who gave everything for a sovereign and free nation.
During the six decades that separate us from the beginning of this historic struggle, the Mozambican Armed Forces (FADM) have consolidated themselves as guardians not only of territorial integrity, but also of the values of unity and patriotism that define our people. These values continue to inspire every soldier, every man and woman who wears the military uniform, committing themselves daily to protecting the country and its sovereignty.
A Fight of Bravery and Sacrifice
The armed struggle for independence was fought in the forests and fields of Mozambique, in battles of resistance and courage against the colonial regime. Men and women like Eduardo Mondlane and Samora Machel are just a few names from a long list of figures who marked the Mozambique Liberation Front (FRELIMO), the organization that led the resistance against colonial occupation. These were years of bravery, sacrifice, and loss that, in the end, guaranteed freedom and the birth of a new nation.
With independence in 1975, Mozambique entered a new era, but the struggle did not end there. The FADM (Armed Forces of Mozambique) continued to play a crucial role, now on the fronts of progress and development. Their mission, once military, came to include building a better future for all Mozambicans, in areas such as security, education, and community development.
Armed Forces and Development
The progress and development of the country continue to be the new battlefields of the Mozambican Armed Forces (FADM). Today, more than defending borders and guaranteeing internal peace, the Mozambican military forces are deeply involved in humanitarian missions, supporting national security, and empowering populations. Technical training programs, assistance in remote areas, and support in humanitarian crises have been some of the fronts where our "mambas" have demonstrated their versatility and commitment.
Yesterday's and Today's Heroes
The term "hero" is not limited to those who fought in the trenches for independence. Today, the Armed Forces are composed of men and women who daily face new challenges, such as the fight against terrorism in the north of the country, and security operations on the borders. They keep alive the ideals of freedom and sovereignty for which so many fought, and continue to ensure that Mozambique moves towards a future of peace and prosperity.
Our “mambas” — as they are affectionately known — are more than just soldiers; they are heroes who, with courage and determination, continue to tread the path that began 60 years ago.
The fight continues.
On this Day of the Mozambican Armed Forces, we remember that the struggle continues, although now fought on different fronts. The fight for security, equality, and sustainable development is the new challenge that the Mozambican Armed Forces face, always with the same spirit of bravery and commitment that characterized their creation.
May this day inspire us to honor the past and build a future where the values of freedom, sovereignty, and progress are a reality for all Mozambicans.
Happy Armed Forces Day of Mozambique!
