On June 1st, International Children's Day, Mozambican digital influencer and entrepreneur Guyzelh Ramos performed a gesture of solidarity that touched many hearts. In an environment where vulnerability and the struggle for survival are a daily reality, Guyzelh dedicated part of his morning to the garbage collectors at the Hulene dump in Maputo.<\/p>\n

Recognizing the importance of humanizing and valuing those often marginalized by society, Guyzelh offered t-shirts and bags of snacks to informal workers who depend on the trash dump for their livelihood. His presence was met with smiles and gratitude from the beneficiaries, many of whom live in extremely precarious conditions. The Hulene landfill is the largest open-air waste dump in Maputo. Located about 7 kilometers from the city center, it receives tons of urban solid waste daily. However, for hundreds of waste pickers, this site represents a source of income, albeit one fraught with environmental and public health risks.<\/p>\n

The site, historically marked by tragedies\u2014such as the landslide that claimed lives in 2018\u2014remains operational due to a lack of suitable alternatives. The definitive closure of the landfill depends on the completion of the Katembe sanitary landfill, which is scheduled to open in 2027, according to the Municipality of Maputo.<\/p>\n

Guyzelh Ramos's gesture, while symbolic, reignites the debate on the dignity and recognition of communities that subsist in conditions of social invisibility. By shining a spotlight on the reality of Hulene's waste pickers, the influencer contributes to an urgent reflection: the need for more inclusive public policies and social actions that not only mitigate immediate needs but also promote structural change.<\/p>\n
