The 2024\/2025 Champions League group stage will be decided this Thursday, August 29, in Monaco, with a draw that will mark the start of the competition with a new format. For the first time, the draw will be conducted using software, representing an innovation in the history of the competition.<\/p>\n
This edition will feature 36 clubs, including two teams featuring Mozambican talent: Reinildo Mandava's Atl\u00e9tico de Madrid and Geny Catamo's Sporting Clube de Portugal. Both players have the chance to shine in Europe's most prestigious club competition, while eagerly awaiting their group stage opponents.<\/p>\n
The new Champions League format brings a different dynamic. The 36 teams will be divided into four pots, with nine clubs in each. Real Madrid, as defending champions, is guaranteed a spot in Pot 1. In this initial phase, the clubs will not only compete in traditional home-and-away matches, but each will face two opponents from each pot. Each team will play eight games, four at home and four away, with the goal of accumulating maximum points.<\/p>\n
An important new development is the introduction of the G8 and Z12 concept, which will play a key role in determining the matchups. At this stage, clubs from the same country will not face each other, except in leagues with four representatives, such as England, Spain, Italy, and Germany. This creates the possibility of early national derbies, such as Real Madrid vs. Barcelona or Juventus vs. Inter Milan, right at the start of the competition.<\/p>\n
The top eight teams from this first stage will advance directly to the round of 16. Teams finishing between 9th and 24th will still have a chance to advance, competing in the playoffs to join the top eight. However, teams finishing between 25th and 36th will be eliminated from the competition.<\/p>\n
The knockout stage will follow the traditional format, culminating in the grand final, which will be held at the Allianz Arena, home of Bayern Munich.
