Samora Machel became the first president of the newly independent country, and his partnership with Graça Machel was a symbol of unity and determination in challenging times.

But Graça Machel's story is not limited to her marriages. She is a woman of great erudition, having graduated in German Philology from the University of Lisbon. Her education and passion for teaching led her to return to Mozambique as a teacher, where she also played a crucial role in the clandestine struggle with FRELIMO during the Armed Struggle for National Liberation.

Graça Machel served as Minister of Education and Culture in Mozambique's first government for approximately 14 years, shaping the nation's educational future. Following the tragic death of Samora Machel in 1986, she continued to be an influential voice in politics as a member of the Frelimo party.

Furthermore, her commitment to the cause of human rights led her to create the Foundation for Community Development, a non-profit organization dedicated to improving the lives of communities in Mozambique. In 1990, she was appointed by the Secretary-General of the United Nations to lead a study on the impact of armed conflict on children, receiving global recognition for her work and the United Nations “Nansen Medal” in 1995.

Graça Machel is a true champion of peace, equality, and justice, and was one of the winners of the North-South Prize in 1998. In addition, she currently serves as president of the Board of Trustees of the University of Cape Town.

Today, on her birthday, we wish Graça Machel Mandela a day filled with joy and celebration. She is an example of determination, courage, and commitment to a better world, and her legacy inspires many in their pursuit of a more inclusive and just planet.

Born in Incadine, Manjacaze, Gaza, on October 17, 1945, Graça Machel has been an untiring force in her dedication to public service and the promotion of human rights throughout her life.
