Chapter 41 – Race Counseling
In the PROSPERAR room, mentor Ernesto pulled up a chair for Salimo and opened the notebook.
"Let's choose with our heads and feet on the ground. Tell me: how much space do you have, what food can you guarantee, and what is your main objective?"“
"Small backyard, suburban area. I can get cracked corn, some bran, and greens from the neighborhood. I want fertile eggs for Hamza to incubate, and for the chicks to grow well in Beto's backyard."“
Ernesto nodded.
"Listen then. Boschveld: an African breed, hardy, withstands heat and rain, roams freely in open yards, consumes less feed, and is more resistant to disease. It produces eggs consistently, it's not a champion in egg production, but it hardly gives you any headaches.".
“"Koekoek: dual-purpose. Good posture, reasonable meat quality, calm temperament. Tolerates outdoor rearing well and responds well to simple feeding.".
“"Black Australorp: an excellent layer. If you provide regular feed and proper management, it lays many eggs. It needs a little more care and quality feed.".
“"Sasso: grows quickly, great for fattening. Requires higher protein feed, but reaches market weight quickly. Also lays eggs, but its main focus is meat."”
Ernesto turned the page.
"Now, a real-life example: you want fertile eggs that will produce strong chicks for fattening. A simple strategy is to cross Sasso roosters with hardy hens (Boschveld or Koekoek). The chick inherits hardiness from the mother and weight gain from the father. To maintain egg volume, you can include 2-3 Australorp hens as elite layers."“
"So... how many and which ones should I buy?" Salimo asked.
"It starts with 6 Boschveld (the backbone of your flock), 2 Australorp (to boost egg production), and 1 Sasso rooster (the engine of fattening). Low risk, good results."“
Salimo smiled: now the choice made sense.
Practical lesson: define your objective (eggs, meat, or both), estimate your management needs (space, feed, climate), and choose breeds that complement each other.
